Course Descriptions

COURSE TITLE – BAND

COURSE DESCRIPTION – This course is designed to develop music literacy, performance, and listening skills of the student through ensemble performance of varied band repertoire. Band is open to all students with previous band experience (or at the director’s discretion) playing a wind or percussion instrument. Students will receive one credit per year of successful completion.

COURSE TITLE – CHOIR

COURSE DESCRIPTION – This course is designed to provide the student with a basic knowledge of choral music. This course will include foundational studies in vocal techniques, sight singing, music theory concepts, and music history. The rehearsing and performing of choral music will achieve the application of these principles. Choir is open to all students with an interest in singing. Choir is worth one credit per year of successful completion.

MUSIC HISTORY AND APPRECIATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION – This one semester course is the study of musical time periods and composers. This course will also introduce musical elements, forms, and styles contained in each time period. Students will keep notes in a PowerPoint format (students will leave class with a copy of their presentation at the semester’s end), listen to musical examples, and do a variety of assignments (fact-based and critical-thinking/opinion-based).

OUTLINE OF TOPICS – Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary, Jazz, and Rock time periods. Where applicable, students will study about the European and American influences during each time period.

COURSE TITLE – MUSIC THEORY

COURSE DESCRIPTION – This one semester course is the study of musical elements and how they are used in music composition. This class is restricted to juniors and seniors, unless a student demonstrates extreme musical aptitude and knowledge (example-years of private instruction). In these cases, entrance will be at the teacher’s discretion. There will be daily assignments, quizzes, chapter tests, and unit tests.

OUTLINE OF TOPICS – Notation, Scales, Tonality, Keys, Modes, Intervals, Transposition, Chords, Cadences, Nonharmonic Tones, Melodic Organization, Texture, Two and Four Part Voice Leading, Harmonic Progression and Rhythm, Modulation, and Two and Three Part Form.
