COURSE TITLE BASIC ART

COURSE DESCRIPTION - This full year course is designed to introduce the student to the art world through hands on experiences in a variety of art media. This basic course is developed with the philosophy that art has fundamental skills and everyone can learn to draw and create art as a means of expression and communication. The course will help students to gain a perspective of art history, to develop an appreciation for art of the past and the present and to broaden the student’s understanding of the meaning and purpose of art.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES - Students will:

1.    demonstrate the fundamental skills of art (draw, paint, print,    

model, construct)

2.    understand the principles and elements of art

3.    demonstrate an understanding of art criticism and

develop a command of the vocabulary and language of art

4.    demonstrate an awareness and knowledge of art history and appreciation for art today.

5.    demonstrate the ability to express ideas, responses, reactions and feelings towards art.

6.    use art resources (galleries, museums, books, periodicals, films and slides) to enhance their experiences in art.

 

OUTLINE OF POSSIBLE TOPICS:

1.    Drawing: pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, pen and ink,

      pastels, markers, scratchboard

2.    Painting: watercolor, acrylic, oil, tempera

3.    Design: 2-D and 3-D

4.    Pottery: hand building and wheel introduction

5.    Crafts: glass etching

6.    Printmaking

7.    Art History

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR CREDIT:

1.            Assignments are in class projects so attendance is important as  w

               ell as participation in critiques and class discussions.

COURSE TITLE ADVANCED ART

COURSE DESCRIPTION   Advanced Art is an in depth study of visual expression. This full year course is designed to build upon those previously acquired skills and knowledge’s developed in the first year of art. (Must have taken Basic Art)



COURSE OBJECTIVES _ Students will:

1.    create art expressed in the language, structure and form of art using a variety of media

2.    develop a greater understanding of the principles and elements of art and their importance to   the artist and the viewer.

3.    recognize the art of the masters.

4.    critique art using the vocabulary and language of art

5.    develop a portfolio.

 

OUTLINE OF POSSIBLE TOPICS:

1.    Mixed media problems in drawing, painting and college

2.    Design problems 2-D and 3-D

3.    Sculpture

4.    Pottery: Wheel, hand building, glazing techniques

5.    Printmaking problems

6.    Crafts: batik, glass etching, silk screen

7.    Displaying art: matting and framing

8.    Art History

9.    Portfolio

10.   Introduction to water colors, acrylic and oils
