Intro to Chemistry and Physics

Purpose:

The purpose of this class is for the students to learn the How, What , and Why of our physical surroundings.  At the end of this course the student will be able to explain in scientific terms how things work and why.

Earning Credit:

The student’s grade will be determined by daily work, labs, quizzes and tests.  At the end of each quarter these grades will be averaged for the final percentage. Because there will be much more homework pts given then quizzes or tests, the home work will not affect the grade as much as quizzes and test.  See example:

                            Daily Work                                   Quizzes/Labs                                 Tests

Totals                  400                                                  120                                                  200

Earned                 340                                                  110                                                  190

Percent                            85%                                                 92%                                                 95%

Final Percentage            (85% + 92% + 95%) / 3 = 91% (B+)

The student’s is required to keep a binder of the handouts, lab reports, quizzes and test for each semester of work.  Attendance is also necessary for the student to successfully complete this course.

Science Text Book

The Science text book that we use can be accessed on line at www.glencoe.com/sites/montana/student/science/index.html.  Under physical science double click on Glencoe Physical Science copyright 2002.  User Name is Physical and the pass word is qArEfu9ube as shown.

Materials

Each student is required to have an 1 ½ “ Three Ring Binder and a calculator.  A simple scientific calculator is fine.

Semester Test:

If a student does not miss more than 3 non-school related days in the class and has a 92% or better average for the semester, then that student will be given the option of taking the semester test.  If they choose to take the test, the test cannot lower the grade that student has already achieved.  However; it can raise that student’s grade for the semester.

Extra Credit:

Extra credit is not given.  If a student falls behind in the course it is more important that he/she make up the work missed and at the same time stay with the class.  Extra credit takes away the time needed to get caught up.
