FORMULATE DISTRICT ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY The Board had received a rough draft of an athletic philosophy developed with input from the administration, athletic directors, and coaching staff to review. As requested, this rough draft had been posted on the school’s web site for the past month so community members could also review it and provide input.
Trustee Brenda Cunniff stated that the rough draft was a good start but felt it was too wordy. Trustee Katie Rasmussen felt that the process should begin with developing a simple one or two sentence mission statement as to why athletics are offered. Trustee Sharon Rice asked the Chairman to appoint a committee to interview past and present coaches, participants, and parents for the purpose of developing a mission statement and athletic philosophy as soon as possible so that the Board can adopt policy or whatever is needed to put what is developed into place before the beginning of the school year.
Chairman Kirk Moore appointed Trustees Katie Rasmussen, Sharon Rice, and Brenda Cunniff to work with the rest of the Board, the community, coaches, and administration regarding this matter and report back to the Board as a whole at a July meeting if possible. There was further discussion about developing an athletic mission statement and philosophy between the Board, administration, and visitors at this time. Issues such as a broad versus specific philosophy, a player code of ethics, random or mandatory drug testing for participants, and coaching job descriptions were brought up and discussed briefly as this work session needed to be adjourned at 7:30 p.m. so that the regular meeting could be convened.
